Great American

Rating: 🎄🎄🎄🎄

Description: A Second Chance Christmas centers on Anna and James Campbell, who both arrive early to their family cabin in Townsend, Tennessee, ahead of a planned Christmas gathering with their adult children. When an unexpected ice storm hits, knocking out power and cell service and closing the roads, their kids are unable to join them, leaving Anna and James stranded alone together for several days. Forced to rely on candlelight, firewood, and improvised meals, they begin revisiting old traditions while uncovering long-held misunderstandings. As they reflect on how they each misread pivotal moments in the past and share how their faith has reshaped them, the storm outside becomes a backdrop for reconciliation and renewed connection, turning what was meant to be an awkward holiday obligation into a meaningful second chance.

Overall Review: Great American came out of the gate at full speed this Christmas movie season, and I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting to be impressed.

I’m not usually a fan of Christmas movies that are so heavy-handed with their Christian messaging that the dialogue starts sounding like a Sunday school lesson mixed with a romantic subplot. Yes, there were a few moments when Scripture was dropped into conversations with all the subtlety of a brick through a stained-glass window. But overall? I was pleasantly surprised.

The chemistry between the leads actually worked, including Candace Cameron Bure, who can occasionally be a one-reaction pony. The log cabin setting did most of the heavy lifting when it came to Christmas decor.

All in all, A Second Chance Christmas was more than just tolerable. Four trees might be a generous rating for the very first movie of the season, but Great American finally delivered a strong contender. And if this is how we’re starting, maybe there’s hope for the rest of the Christmas movie marathon.
